The E1 Multi 8: A Modern Twist on a Classic Screwdriver

Almost everyone has a screwdriver – but screwdrivers aren’t often designed for everyone. From aesthetics to materials to ergonomics, Hofer Studio designed the E1 Multi 8 screwdriver to feel comfortable for all users, in many settings and across many years, without sacrificing durability or sustainability.

Words by Jackelyn Gill

While the screwdriver is a near-universal tool, not everyone connects with the design or experience of using one. For many, they’re uncomfortable to use, the aggressive aesthetic repels more than it draws, and despite the rugged appearance, the materials aren’t necessarily built to last.

The E1 Multi 8 screwdriver was designed to answer those problems, adopting a lifestyle product philosophy with greater appeal to people who prefer a tool that fits into the office or the kitchen more than it does a garage or workbench. It’s a modern take on a classic tool that shows just how deeply thoughtful, clear, and approachable design benefits everyone.

A calmer aesthetic

The E1 Multi 8 opts for a timeless and clean aesthetic focused on simplicity in shape and use. The precision-tooled, high-grade plastic handle doesn’t degrade over time and provides the grip and torque necessary without requiring painting or upkeep to retain its finish. Similarly, the stainless steel collar ages gracefully, resisting damage and requiring little effort to maintain its spin-finished sheen, while the eight hardened-metal bits are built to withstand years of use.

A fit for every hand

With an ergonomically-shaped handle that widens toward the shaft and narrows toward the back, the E1 Multi 8’s softly tapered design allows three flat-sided grips to remain in reach at all times while making it clear where to hold the handle. These details allow the screwdriver to intuitively work for all hands—small and large, young and old, soft and rough—while being flexible enough to accommodate different ways of gripping the handle without slipping.

A sustainable approach

A response to throw-away products and single-purpose tools that require multiple purchases and greater manufacturing demand, the E1 Multi 8 puts sustainability at the forefront as a multi-tool that lasts generations. Should disposal be necessary, however, the design is optimized with single-material components, making it simpler to disassemble for reuse or recycling than the composite approach found in plastic-and-rubber handles.

A focus on the little things

The result of conversations with Ikea, the E1 Multi 8 includes two sizes of Allen bits that fit the most common fasteners for flat-pack and knockdown furniture: 4mm and 5mm. The same level of care is evident in other details, like the magnetic end cap that avoids over-tightening through normal use of the screwdriver and damage to threading that are common with screw-tops, ensuring it stays strong, easy, and quick to remove. Underneath that cap, a small rubber ring keeps each bit in place and prevents them from rattling inside the handle.

A screwdriver on a mission

Originally licensed to a Canadian cause innovation company in support of charities to help fund cancer treatments, education, and support, the E1 Multi 8 screwdriver doesn’t just elevate the connection between people and their tools; it also improves the lives of others in our communities. It’s now available for exclusive licensing.
