Delivering Better: Closing the Delivery Window for Good

Much of the western world is now dependent on purchase deliveries. Beyond books and accessories, we’ve now become accustomed to even ordering perishables online. Food, prescription drugs—you name it, we get it by the tap of a few buttons, right from our couch. This new wave of purchase behaviour brings with it competitive opportunities for innovation and a hastened need for security. This is why Veranda is making home deliveries a more considered process.

Words by Rony Mikhael, Joseph Hofer

Focused on economizing the last mile of deliveries while prioritizing the safety and integrity of the products delivered, Veranda has created a passive-energy refrigerated delivery receptacle for front porch deliveries. Using bluetooth technology, the box is secured, thwarting the attempts of porch pirates, all while keeping the delivered contents (and the recipient) cool and contained. Veranda puts the control back into shoppers’ hands, easing their anxieties around having their valuable deliveries ruined or even stolen.

Veranda simplifies home deliveries so that customers aren’t required to rush or be stuck at home to receive deliveries at a certain time. Grocers and retailers can deliver these purchases at a more optimal time, making much better use of their resources. Veranda helps people get back to the things that matter; seniors can receive medications without hassle, busy people can eat fresher, and parents can spend more quality time with their families.

Smart lock architecture and design-for-manufacture

The Veranda cooler design direction marries the technical and manufacturing requirements of an insulated unit into a soft, friendly shape that easily sheds water, and fits into tight quarters with the rounded corners and smaller proportions.

The lid has a full length grip for easy access from different angles, and a simple, single button to interact with the lock for setup and access.

The approach to thermal is passive. Alternatives on the market focus on placing a fridge on the porch with high power and maintenance needs. This approach is a robust box that is on par with a Yeti cooler, while adding rich sensor data and access control. This allows the ability to notify a user how many hours remain before frozen foods will melt.

What’s In A Name

The streamlined logistics that make a business run efficiently are reflected in the lives of people, too. This can mean fewer runs to the grocery store, easier meal planning, and more secure deliveries—all things that make a personʼs busy life a bit easier to manage. Efficiency in logistics is great, but it can be hard to get people excited about this. Names were explored that felt human, like they could easily fit into someoneʼs everyday life.

How this concept might come to life creatively: sense of home, thresholds/portals, dynamic systems, input/output, motion and fluidity, etcetera.

Veranda’s application provides a dashboard to manage multiple home deliveries while allowing remote monitoring and security control. We’ve designed the platform to provide helpful data to customers who want to shop smarter. This kind of service means data is collected, so we’re committed to the helpful and ethical use of that data with radical transparency.
